Vienna’s one of the top European tourist destinations around Christmas. To walk its beautiful streets, full of lights, to visit the Christmas markets for a cup of punch or mulled wine seems to be a fairytale vacation for so many families. And yet for me, being in Vienna for Christmas just means that I couldn’t make it back home to my family.
Last Christmas was the first that I spent here. Deep in the process of finishing my thesis and out of money, I decided it was best to spare myself a 15 hour bus drive and just stay in my dorm. Luckily, my boyfriend didn’t abandon me and we spent the holidays cuddled up with lots of food, movies and hundreds of pages of research. This year I stayed because I started a new job last month (!) and it didn’t make sense to me to spend two of my four free days in airports. And even though I couldn’t see my parents or my friends, I guess Vienna’s not the worst place to be in at Christmas time.
