Bratislavsky hrad

I like going to Bratislava. It’s a cheap and fast escape for when I need a break from Vienna. An hour away, a 14 euro two-way bus ticket and I’m there – underneath the Novy Most, the UFO tower and the castle!

Yes, yes, Vienna has its share of lavish palaces and imperial gardens, but after almost seven years of living here, I’ve gotten used to seeing them. This castle is very different from them. Its white facade, lack of detail and its central position on the hilltop above the Danube give it a far more medieval appearance. Indeed, the site has been used as a strategic point by Celts, Romans and many others since long before the building of the castle.

And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, check out the view.
